artist statement

As a Texas native coming up on eight years of SoCal living, I am deeply inspired and enamored by the role of Hollywood and Los Angeles and its function as a surrealistic, dreamlike land where nightmares and dreams function as one, and LA exists as the land of dichotomy, a dark chaotic haven and a paradise all in one.

At its core, Faces is a meditation on this idea, the complexities of romantic relationships and blurred lines. The inspiration surrounding this film has a lot to do with dissecting the psyche of women partnered with men accused of sexual assault and rape. What emotional processing do these women undergo? Shock, denial, disgust, or all of the above? What does it mean to have ‘everything’ but still know that deep down, something isn’t right, haunted by dark energy of the past and the city itself?

I’m also intrigued by the way social groups function in arts and creative educational settings, groupthink, how the negative and toxic factors of these environments exist on a collegiate level and everyday professional grind of the entertainment industry.

My goal is to weave together a piece of surrealistic cinema that highlights how we view victims of sexual assault, the ‘perfect’ victim, and the expectations of women to believe, remember, and process allegations.
